- (b Mattsee, nr Salzburg, 5 Sept. 1781; d Vienna, 7 April 1858).
Austrian music publisher and composer. In 1803 he set himself up as a teacher of the piano and guitar and as a proofreader in Vienna. In 1818 he joined the music publishing firm of Cappi, which later (1824) became Anton Diabelli & Cie. The firm existed under the Diabelli name until 1852 and numbered many of Schubert's works among its publications. Apart from publishing, Diabelli is chiefly remembered for having prompted composition of Beethoven's 33 Variations on a Waltz by Diabelli.
