On April 10, 2014, the Gershwin Model A Steinway came home to the School of Music, Theatre & Dance for the second time.  Their work completed, PianoCrafters engaged Piano Moving Specialists, a company out of Dearborn Heights, MI to deliver the piano to the Piano Tech workshop located next to the loading dock of the Moore Building.  The owner of the business is an affable fellow named Jack Carter.  He’s the best there is in the Metro Detroit area.  He handles every move personally, he cares about his crew’s safety, and he commands their respect.  The results speak for themselves; he’s had the same crew members for almost a decade.  In an industry known for rapid turnover, that’s a significant distinction.  It shows in the manner by which the moves he accomplishes go.  Theirs is a ballet of muscle and the physics of balancing a piano on edge.  There is calm among the crew; they’ve handled every kind of piano moving scenario imaginable: through the vagaries of Michigan’s weather, in tight corners on properties with flagstone walking paths and overgrown grass, and in and out of homes and apartments with multiple flights of stairs.  They barely have to talk during a set-up or tear down.  They know who stands where, and when to lift; who attaches a leg, and how to ensure that a pedal lyre goes on solidly.  Poetry in motion?  Perhaps not, but then, perhaps…..
